In re Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001, MDL 1570 (S.D.N.Y)

The 9/11 Families United to Bankrupt Terrorism civil action, Thomas Burnett Sr., et. al. vs. Al Baraka Banking and Investment, et. al, was filed on August 15, 2002, on behalf of 500 pioneer survivors and victims' family members after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The plaintiffs grew to much larger numbers, and today the legal action includes more than 6,500 survivors and family members. The litigation focuses on individuals, banks, corporations and Islamic charities historically implicated in the sponsoring al Qaeda’s terrorist activities. Originally filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the lawsuit has since been consolidated in In re Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2011, MDL 1570, and transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Our attorneys are seeking justice for 9/11 victims and families by uncovering the support structures and resources of terrorist groups and bankrupting their material sponsors. This lawsuit is based on the principles of safety and freedom from terrorism and is designed to deter, punish and bankrupt individuals and entities that fund terrorism, and ultimately deprive them of the means to conduct future acts of terror.

Complex Anti-Terrorism Litigation

The 9/11 Families United to Bankrupt Terrorism is founded upon the premise that those who sponsor terrorist organizations are liable for the damages caused by their activities.

The U.S. civil justice system is one of the most powerful tools society has to promote safety. Federal laws, expanded to encompass anti-terrorism efforts, allow for this litigation against the individuals and entities used by the terrorists to enact the atrocities of 9/11, including many organizations disguised as Islamic charities.

Plaintiffs' lawyer Ron Motley serves as lead counsel for the 9/11 Families United to Bankrupt Terrorism litigation, working together with several other Motley Rice attorneys who serve on the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee for the lawsuit. Our team also works with several experienced investigators and researchers to investigate and expose the sponsors of al Qaeda across many countries and languages.
