On Friday, Jan.11, 2013, District Court Judge Barbier entered an Order and Judgment granting final approval of the Medical Benefits Class Action Settlement. If this Order is not appealed, the Medical Benefits Class Action Settlement will become final and effective as soon as the appeal deadline expires.
We do anticipate, however, that one or more persons may appeal the Court's decision.
There has been a lot of work done so that the Claims Administrator will be prepared to provide benefits promptly if the Medical Benefits Class Action Settlement becomes effective. In addition, the Gulf Region Health Outreach Program component has received initial funding and begun its work.

Dec. 28, 2012: Message from the Motley Rice BP Team
On Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, Judge Barbier entered an Order and Judgment Granting Final Approval of the Economic and Property Damages Settlement and Confirming Certification of An Economic and Property Damages Settlement Class. This Order now is final at the District Court level and, absent an appeal, will become a final, binding order.
We do anticipate that one or more persons will appeal portions of this decision.
We will continue to process claims pursuant to the individual contracts we have entered with our clients and anticipate that the Claims Facility will pick up the pace of its processing of claims in 2013. There has been a lot of work done to clarify issues concerning this Settlement with the Claims Administrator that has now worked its way through the system, and we contemplate a much faster process.

Dec. 21, 2012: Judge Barbier granted final approval of the Economic and Property Damages Settlement.
May 5, 2012: Judge Barbier issued a preliminary approval order for both the Medical Benefits Settlement and the Economic and Property Damages Settlement.
November 2012: The deadline to revoke Requests for Exclusions (opt-out requests) has been extended to Dec.15, 2012, by Order of the Court.
October 2012: On Oct. 28, 2012 Plaintiffs' Liaison Counsel released a memo to all Plaintiffs' Counsel discussing MDL 2179 deadlines and presentment guidelines.
August 2012: Objection deadlines were extended to Sept. 7, 2012, by Order of the Court.
June 2012: The PSC for the BP MDLheld eight conferences in numerous Gulf coast areas to explain the Settlement Program claims process to lawyers and CPAs who represent individuals and businesses having economic loss and property damage claims. These one-day training sessions were free.
Motley Rice co-founder Joe Rice, a member of the PSC and the MDL 2179 negotiating team, spoke at the sessions held in Biloxi, Houston, Lafayette and Mobile. He and other PSC members addressed the claims process at each conference, and also advise attendees on how to calculate their clients' losses and help them file claims. Many individuals and businesses experienced a decline in revenue in 2010 as a result of the oil spill, some even far from the coast, and these conferences helped explain how such victims may have a right to recovery under the Economic and Property Damages Settlement.
May 2, 2012: U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier granted preliminarily approval of the Economic and Property Damages Settlement and the Medical Benefits Settlement.
April 25, 2012: The court held a Preliminary Approval Hearing regarding the Motions for Preliminary Approval of the proposed Economic and Property Damages Settlement and Medical Benefits Settlement.
April 18, 2012: The Settlement Agreement reached between BP and the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee (PSC) for the BP MDL was filed with the court.
March 8, 2012: The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana issued a First Amended Order Creating Transition Process in connection with an Agreement-in-Principle intended to resolve numerous lawsuits arising out of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.
