UPDATE: SAFETY LABELING CHANGES FOR NUVARING®
On January 31, 2008, the FDA posted safety related labeling changes for NuvaRing®. The changes include a:
- Warning that users have increased risk of arterial thrombotic and thromboembolic events as well as hypertension
- Warning that women using NuvaRing® who have a history of acquired thrombophilia, hyperlipidemia and obesity are at increased risk for stroke
- Warning that users with migraines have increased risk of stroke
- Warning that older women should take lowest dose possible
- Warning that women with hypertension should not use NuvaRing®
- Precaution that some users with hyperlipidemia have developed pancreatitis
- Precaution about severe depression in users
- Precaution about rare reports of vaginal or cervical erosion or ulceration with NuvaRing® use
- Rare reports about insertion of the ring into the urinary bladder
