Signs of Elder Abuse
The following are some clues that your loved one may be receiving inadequate care:
- Rapid deterioration of health and/or mental capacities
- Unexplained bruises or lacerations
- Unexplained trips to the hospital
- Injuries from falls or residents wandering
- Pressure ulcers (bedsores)
- Appears fearful or intimidated in staff members' presence
- Always seems to be in bed (not getting proper exercise or environment change)
- The rooms smell bad (urine or feces) or are dirty
- Excessive use of physical or chemical restraints for staff convenience
Be sure that you examine your loved one's physical and environmental conditions. Familiarize yourself with his/her medical chart and medicine regimen. Ask questions of the staff. Inadequate responses or failure to answer might indicate a problem. We realize that placing a loved one in an assisted living facility or nursing home is not an easy choice, yet it is a necessary evil in our modern society. If you suspect abuse or neglect, please go to the proper authorities. Until such time as federal and state lawmakers adopt new reforms of the health care delivery system to the elderly and disabled, Motley Rice LLC will continue to fight for the rights of this defenseless population.
