The U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Government Reform-Minority Office states that there are nearly 17,000 nursing homes in the United States that currently care for 1.6 million residents. They also state that this figure is expected to quadruple to 6.6 million residents by 2050. Other data shows that for every one case of elder abuse, neglect, exploitation reported to authorities, approximately five go unreported. Current estimates also put the overall reporting of financial exploitation at only 1 in 25 cases, suggesting that there may be at least 5 million financial abuse victims each year. It is because of statistics such as these that Motley Rice believes it necessary to educate those that are faced with a decision about how to care for their loved ones.
