MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (November 8, 2005) - Motley Rice LLC, one of the largest plaintiffs' litigation firms in the U.S., today announced that co-founding member, Joseph F. Rice, will present at the 2005 Mealey's Asbestos Liability Forum held in London, England on November 17, 2005. The panel discussion, titled "U.S. Litigation Overview and Analysis," will cover the most recent trends in litigation including, an overview of new and non-traditional defendants arising on the scene, asbestos premises litigation, the latest legislative efforts, the current asbestos bankruptcy landscape and claims forecasts for the future. According to reports, asbestos litigation is expected to be on the rise in the U.K. The UK-based publication, Telegraph, recently cited that asbestos exposure and disease is a serious issue which will only continue to get worse and potentially peak in 2010 as asbestos was heavily used in the country during the 1970s.
Rice leads Motley Rice's efforts in resolving highly complex litigation, such as the asbestos bankruptcy case litigation. He has also served as lead private counsel in the States Attorneys General negotiations with the tobacco industry. This negotiation, lasting three years, led to the largest financial resolution of civil litigation in the history of the U.S. jurisprudence. He is a frequent speaker and author on asbestos and negotiation and has taught classes at University of South Carolina and Duke Law Schools on the subjects. He is a member of the South Carolina Bar, American Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association. He earned a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law and is licensed to practice in South Carolina.
The conference, titled "How to Prepare to Seize the Opportunities and Meet the Demands of the U.S. and U.K. Legal Markets," will be held at the Cavendish Conference Centre in London, England, starting at 8:00am on November 17th and concluding on November 18th at 12:30 pm. Rice will present on Thursday beginning at 9:15 a.m. Because 2005 has already proved to be a pivotal year for asbestos litigation and legislation around the globe, the conference will focus on preparing for and meeting the ever-changing demands of the U.S. and U.K. legal markets. The forum will bring together top international attorneys, insurers, industry experts and physicians to share the newest insights and provide practical advice regarding asbestos litigation in the United States and abroad, including a comprehensive explanation of differences in the countries' legal systems.
