Asbestos Awareness Week: ADAO encourages victims to share their story
April 1-7, 2011 is Global Asbestos Awareness Week. The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is hosting a variety of programs throughout the week to consolidate awareness efforts on behalf of those impacted by asbestos-related diseases. One such program is the Share Your Story archive which allows asbestos victims and their families the opportunity to tell their personal battles with an asbestos-related disease.
The website encourages those to share as much or as little of their struggle as they feel comfortable with saying, “Your story matters. If you or a loved one has been affected by asbestos, please tell us about your experiences and read stories of others like you. You are not alone.” The site offers stories in more than 50 languages.
Each week they feature an individual’s journey. Read Julie’s story, a 39-year-old woman, mother and peritoneal mesothelioma victim. The ADAO presented Julie with the Alan Reinstein Award at this year’s conference last weekend. The award is named in honor of ADAO’s former president who passed away from mesothelioma.
There are nearly 3,000 people diagnosed with mesothelioma each year in the United States and Canada alone. We hope you will join us in educating people about mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases, which are still relevant today.
