What You Can Do

Be selective when choosing a nursing home. Explore alternatives, and take advantages of available resources that can add to your preliminary research. Once you have made the choice that you think best, monitor your loved one’s treatment at that facility on a regular basis, and remain actively involved with his/her care. If you suspect any type of abuse, neglect or denial of your loved one’s rights, immediately voice your concerns. Some are mild enough that they can be resolved simply by meeting with the facility administrator or director of nursing. More serious concerns, however, demand that you contact your state’s licensing board/survey agency, ombudsman or law enforcement officials. Be mindful that frequent attention to your loved one’s physical and environmental condition and familiarization with his/her medical chart and medications are essential measures that you should take to ensure a high quality of care.
