Developed by Berlex Laboratories, Yasmin is an oral contraceptive that was FDA-approved in 2001 for use in the United States. The newer version of the drug, Yaz, was approved for distribution in 2006.
The difference between the two birth control drugs is the estrogen level within each. Yaz contains 20 mcg. of ethinylestradiol, the estrogen component, whereas Yasmin contains 30 mcg.
Yaz and Yasmin contain a synthetic progestin called drospirenone, making them different from many other oral contraceptives. Researchers have found that drospirenone can elevate the body’s potassium levels and lead to hyperkalemia, a condition involving serious and potentially fatal heart problems.
Other side effects of Yaz and Yasmin use may include blood clots, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder disease, gall bladder damage, kidney stones and renal failure. Many of these conditions can be life threatening.
Yaz and Yasmin have been cited in approximately 1,100 lawsuits in the United States.
