If you took the antidepressant Zoloft® during your pregnancy, your unborn child may have been put at risk of birth defects.
The FDA has classified Zoloft as a pregnancy Category C drug, meaning that it is potentially capable of harming a baby’s development in the womb.
Injuries may include birth defects affecting the heart, skull and abdominal wall, as well as, cleft lip, cleft palate, clubfoot and anal atresia.
Additionally, researchers at the University of Montreal published results from a study on May 31, 2010, in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggesting that women who take antidepressants, such as Zoloft, during the first few weeks of pregnancy are more likely to suffer a miscarriage than women who do not take antidepressants.
Zoloft manufacturer Pfizer Inc. has not issued a Zoloft recall despite numerous studies and FDA warnings.

The Archive of General Psychiatry published a report in July 2011 linking SSRI antidepressants like Zoloft to an increased risk of autism in babies born to mothers who took these drugs during their first few weeks of pregnancy.
The study compared a group of 298 children having varying degrees of autism and their mothers to another group of 1,507 randomly selected children and their mothers. Scientists found a potential link between mothers who took these drugs within a year before delivery and an increase in the risk of their babies being born with autism.
The highest risk for developing autism was found to be among the children whose mothers took SSRI drugs, like Zoloft, during the first trimester.
