9/11 Compensation Fund: Zadroga Act re-opens 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund

On Oct. 3, 2011, the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (9/11 VCF) opened for registration. The reactivation of the original 2001 Fund follows passage of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 earlier this year.

The purpose of the VCF is to provide compensation to 9/11 workers and volunteers who suffered physical harm as a direct result of debris removal efforts or toxic exposure connected to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa. Congress has allocated $2.8 billion for compensation through the reactivated 9/11 VCF, and the U.S. Attorney General has appointed Sheila L. Birnbaum to serve as Special Master of a new Fund.
