Motley Rice lawyer appointed to civil rights advisory committee
PROVIDENCE, RI - Motley Rice LLC attorney Jonathan D. Orent has been named to the Rhode Island State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Earlier this month, the federal commission voted to establish a two-year charter for the Rhode Island Advisory Committee, tasking them with addressing key issues in the region involving discrimination or denials of the equal protection of the laws based on race, color, religion, sex, age, disability or national origin.
Orent was appointed to the Rhode Island State Advisory Committee upon the approval of the panel's charter. Previously, the committee held briefings on civil rights matters such as foreclosure scams and the disparate treatment of minority youth. As part of the committee, Orent will help review reports and recommendations, lead community initiatives and participate in research and investigations on civil rights issues in Rhode Island. The Rhode Island State Advisory Committee is a parallel organization to 50 other state advisory committees organized by the independent and bipartisan U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
Orent joined the Providence, Rhode Island, office of Motley Rice LLC in 2005, where he has been actively involved with the firm's Environmental practice group, representing children and their families in lead poisoning cases against property owners and the lead paint industry in numerous states. Currently, Orent and Motley Rice attorney Bob McConnell represent over 100 residents of Tiverton, Rhode Island, in a civil environmental lawsuit against a major New England utility company.
