Mesothelioma Day Proclamation: The City of Charleston officially declares September 26 Meso Awareness Day

At Charleston City Council on September 25, Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., read a proclamation that officially declared September 26 as Mesothelioma Awareness Day in the City of Charleston. Meso Awareness Day is an initiative of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation).

Motley Rice asbestos attorney Brian Bevon, as well as Captain John Winn, Jr., and Wayne Graham, accepted the proclamation. After the proclamation was read, Mayor Riley shared more about Captain Winn and Mr. Graham with Council members and those present at the meeting.

The father of City of Charleston firefighter Captain Winn Jr., was Battalion Chief Winn who passed away earlier this year from mesothelioma. Mr. Graham works in the City of Charleston's IT departement, and his father also passed away from an asbestos-related disease. His family suspects that his grandfather, who was also a fireman, lost his life to mesothelioma. They also suspect that his grandmother passed away from mesothelioma caused by the asbestos particles she inhaled whn washing her husband's uniform.

A review of death certificates in the United States that was published by NIOSH in 2002 found that the second most common occupation recorded on the death certificates of mesothelioma victims in 1999 was "housewife/homemaker." Additionally, the study found that nearly 20% of mesothelioma deaths were females.

Motley Rice is proud of this proclamation and the awareness that it brings to mesothelioma, as well as the continued efforts of our firm and organizations such as the Meso Foundation.
