DuPont and Mesothelioma: Study uncovers high asbestos-related employee death rates

A recent study conducted by the C8 Science Panel on mortality rates among DuPont Washington Works plant employees found that a high number of workers died following a mesothelioma diagnosis. The study sought to correlate employee deaths and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) exposure. However, research found that six workers died between 1999 and 2008 from mesothelioma, nearly six times more than the expected U.S. average for this time period.

Scientists conducting this research concluded that the mesothelioma diagnoses were not related to PFOA and were more likely due to asbestos exposure. The study involved nearly 5,800 workers employed by DuPont between 1948 and 2002.

Located in West Virginia, DuPont Washington Works manufactures almost 700 million pounds of products used in various automotive, food industry, construction and household items each year.
