Legal report reveals harsh treatment at federal immigrant detention centers
A recent report calls attention to harsh conditions and a lack of regulatory enforcement at federal immigrant detention centers, describing "pervasive and extreme violations of the government's own detention standards as well as fundamental violations of basic human rights." The report, titled "A Broken System," was a collaborative effort to analyze previously confidential reports from the American Bar Association reviewing standards at the facilities.
Motley Rice currently serves as lead counsel in a suit filed by The Rhode Island Affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the family of Jason Ng, a 34-year-old Chinese detainee who died while in the custody of immigration officials at the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, RI. The case alleges that more than two dozen defendants, including officials and employees of both the Wyatt facility and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), violated his constitutional rights. Among the causes of action alleged in the complaint are excessive force and brutality, constitutionally inadequate medical care, denial of counsel and violations of anti-discrimination laws on the basis of disability.
