Boeing 787 Dreamliner: Was the FAA behind the Curve?

Motley Rice aviation attorney and former U.S. Department of Transportation Inspector General Mary Schiavo has appeared on several news programs to discuss the FAA's recent action to ground all Boeing 787 Dreamliners until the aircraft manufacturer can resolve its problem with faulty, lithium-ion batteries. She told Dan Rather Reports, "when there's a possibility of any kind of fire, chemical, smoke or fume that could kill people, that's what gets your plane grounded."

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Schiavo said, "The FAA was behind the curve on the Boeing issue and, particularly, their performance at the press conference when they were announcing the review of Boeing. Here, they announced about their certification about the Dreamliner, yet they stood at the press conference and said that this airliner is safe. Well that's not their job. Their job should have been to look at these batteries long before now."
