Hidden killer: Upholstered furniture free of federal fire regulation
Motley Rice attorney Kevin Dean comments on reports showing that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has yet to regulate upholstered furniture fire safety issues despite the hundreds of upholstered furniture-related deaths occurring each year. Various lawsuits, including that involving the 2007 Charleston, SC Sofa Super Store fire, have prompted the Commission to review a proposal to establish a national flammability standard for upholstered furniture.
