Former DOT Inspector General Mary Schiavo speaks with CNN about safety concerns surrounding volcanic eruption emissions

Motley Rice aviation attorney Mary Schiavo discusses the recent eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano and the resulting blast that has pushed vast plumes of volcanic ash into Eurpoean skies, shutting down numerous airports and cancelling the flights of thousands of passengers.

Schiavo says that, despite the financial loss and inconvenience, it remains "very important that they cancel flights or avoid the ash flow of the plume" as planes attempting to fly through the plume are unable to withstand the buildup of melting volcanic glass that can accumulate on and ultimately shut down the engines.
