Law360: Motley Rice launches Public Client practice led by former D.C. Attorney General Linda Singer
Speaking with the legal news outlet Law360 , Linda Singer described public interest litigation as a means of “doing the work I care about in government, with all the support you get in the private sector.”
Singer, a former Washington, D.C. Attorney General, who has worked on Public Client cases at a private firm for than eight years, recently joined Motley Rice to lead the firm’s new Public Client practice. From the firm’s D.C. office, she and a team of at least six other attorneys will work to protect public resources and interests by representing state attorneys general, local governments and other public entities.
When asked of Motley Rice’s appeal, Singer pointed to the firm’s willingness to engage in litigation, “When I started doing public client work, many more cases were resolved at the investigation stage or early in litigation. That has changed, and I think it’s really important to have the ability to take and try big cases for public entities,” Singer said.
Also joining Motley Rice’s Public Client practice area is member Mimi Liu who has represented states fighting on behalf of consumers who allege harm by defective Takata airbags, marketing of opioid drugs as well as alleged deceptive debt collection practices.
Having been involved in cases that resulted in millions of dollars of recoveries, including a $850 million settlement with Hess Corp. and a $750 million settlement with Bank of America Corp for Nevada and Arizona, Linda stated what’s most important was that they “moved the needle on policy.”*
They continue to work on opioid litigation involving pharmaceutical companies such as Teva Pharmaceuticals and Purdue Pharma Inc. The suits allege the companies oversold the addictive pain killers, hiding how addictive they were. They will also represent the city of Chicago in a false advertising case.
