Aviation lawyer addresses holiday travel concerns
With a busy travel season ahead, the recent discovery of suspicious packages on cargo planes bound for the United States has led to growing concerns regarding airport security during the holiday travel season.
Al Qaeda allegedly claimed responsibility for the packages, stating that it planned to send explosive devices on cargo planes headed to the U.S. According to Motley Rice aviation lawyer and former U.S. Department of Transportation Inspector General Mary Schiavo, the recent bomb scare represents a major gap in national security.
"They're anticipating a record year of travel. That means more passengers moving through the system …that means people will be tempted to skip on some of the security measures so there's not a backlog at airport checkpoints," says Schiavo.
Schiavo predicts passengers in Charleston will not notice any significant changes while traveling because local airport security follows high standards. They may notice, however, a difference in the time required for shipping parcels to get through the system and to their final destinations.
