International Asbestos Conference: Motley Rice lawyer speaks in India about consequences of toxic exposure
Motley Rice occupational disease and toxic tort litigators Anne McGinness Kearse and James Ledlie recently attended "An International Meet on Climate, the Workplace and the Lungs" at the Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India. The conference enabled researchers, policy makers, students and others from around the world to exchange knowledge and ideas on preventing and coping with toxic exposure sustained in the workplace. The issues presented at this conference were further evidence that asbestos is a worldwide issue that continues to greatly affect the lives of many.
Only one of six speakers from the United States, Kearse presented during a symposium addressing workers' compensation issues. Also a faculty member, Ledlie participated in a panel discussion with Kearse. Additional presentations on the agenda included: Occupational and Environmental Cancers; Workplace Exposures and the Lungs; Heavy Metal Exposure and Kidney Disease; and Lead Exposure in India.
"It was an honor to be among those selected to speak at this noted conference," said Kearse. "The exchange of ideas on issues that impact everyone, regardless of nationality, was invaluable."
Following the conference, the World Health Organisation (WHO) called for a ban on all forms of asbestos to avoid a health catastrophe due to the potential illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis, that exposure can cause.
