Environmental lawsuits facing former Parks-Apollo nuclear facility operators

Two former nuclear enriching facilities in Pennsylvania's Parks Township-Apollo area are facing federal lawsuits filed on Friday, May 28, 2010, by 15 area residents who allege that facility operations caused illness and death resulting from such factors as environmental contamination and chemical exposure. Represented by Motley Rice LLC and Pittsburgh law firm Goldberg, Persky & White, the plaintiffs join others who filed similar lawsuits on January 26, 2010, against the same defendants.

The defendants named in the lawsuits are Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group and Atlantic Richfield Company, both formerly operated by Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corp. (NUMEC). The two companies ran a uranium fuel-processing plant in Apollo and a plutonium plant in Parks from 1957 - 1986.
