Statement on the passage of Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, S. 2040

By: Jodi Westbrook Flowers, Motley Rice LLC member and attorney for 9/11 Families

Today, 9/11 Families received long overdue justice from their elected officials when the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, JASTA. On May 17, 2016, the Senate unanimously passed JASTA.

Now 15 years since 9/11, families and survivors deserve the chance to hold supporters of the attacks accountable through our civil justice system. The passing of JASTA would allow for foreign sponsors of terrorist attacks in the U.S. to be tried in U.S. courts.

We are confident that the bill received enough U.S. Senate votes to override a veto should President Obama veto the bill.
