WTC Health Program: New conditions added, making available treatment services for eligible members

On Feb. 1, 2014, the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program announced it will consider certain blood or bone marrow disorders as WTC-related covered health conditions. According to the WTC Health Program, recent scientific advances characterize these “pre-leukemic” myeloid neoplasms as slow-growing blood cancers, with many sources now considering them to be malignant. As a result, the WTC Health Program has added them as WTC-related health conditions, making them available for WTC Health Program medical treatment services for eligible members.

These conditions include:

  • Acute myeloid leukemia
  • Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDSs)
  • Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs)
  • Myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN)
  • Myeloid malignancies associated with eosinophilia and abnormalities of growth factor receptors derived from platelets or fibroblasts

As in past additions by the WTC Health Program, we anticipate the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) will consider these modifications to the list of presumptively covered conditions.
