Amtrak train carrying 243 passengers derails in Missouri

An Amtrak passenger train that was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed in Mendon, Mo., on June 27, 2022 after hitting a dump truck at a public crossing.

Roughly 243 passengers were on board the train at the time of the collision, according to early news reports. Details on how many people were injured in the incident have not yet been confirmed.

Motley Rice transportation attorneys have extensive experience advocating for victims who were injured, or tragically killed, in train crashes and derailments, including representing a mother and daughter who were injured in a 2018 Amtrak train crash in Cayce, S.C., in addition to reaching a settlement for passengers involved in a two-train collision in Graniteville, S.C., that killed nine people and injured dozens in 2005.

“My thoughts are with the passengers, families and crew members who were affected by this devastating event,” Motley Rice attorney, and former U.S. Department of Transportation Inspector General, Mary Schiavo. “Amtrak’s safety record has been in question for years due to several derailments and other events that caused passengers to sustain injuries, or worse, lose their lives. It has been been alleged that in several of these incidents, improved safety protocols could have lessened the degree of the tragedy if not prevented the event outright. Investigators are still working to determine what went wrong in this latest derailment. The sooner the affected families have answers, the better.”
