New York, NY – (Nov. 19, 2013) Motley Rice LLC is expanding its New York City office with the addition of two antitrust attorneys and the relocation of its current office from Chelsea to Midtown East. Antitrust lawyers Michael M. Buchman (CT, NY) and John A. Ioannou (NY) join the firm, further rounding out Motley Rice’s consumer fraud practice.

“With the downturn of the economy and changing landscape of the financial world and corporate greed, we have unfortunately seen the growing need for regulation in the form of private actions, including antitrust, securities and consumer fraud litigation. Adding to the Motley Rice legal team and expanding the current New York City office is further evidence of our deep-rooted commitment to our clients and co-counsel,” said Donald A. Migliori, managing member of the New York City office. “Through our expanded New York team and presence, Motley Rice will be providing legal services in all of its practice areas, including medical devices and pharmaceutical, catastrophic injury, aviation, occupational disease and commercial litigation in New York.”

Buchman and Ioannou join Migliori as well as securities fraud and SEC whistleblower member Rebecca M. Katz (NY) and securities fraud and asbestos attorney Alex R. Straus (MA, RI, SC) in the new office.

Prior to joining Motley Rice, Buchman served as a managing partner of the antitrust department at a New York-based law firm, playing an active role in two of the largest U.S. antitrust settlements since the Sherman Act was enacted, In re NASDAQ Market-Makers Antitrust Litigation and In re Visa Check/Mastermoney Antitrust Litigation. He currently represents the largest retailer class representative in another antitrust case—the $7.2 billion In re Payment Card Interchange Fee and Merchant Discount Antitrust Litigation, MDL 1720. Having worked with a variety of plaintiff clients, from Fortune 500 companies to individual consumers, Buchman has litigated complex antitrust, consumer protection and privacy class actions. These cases have included issues such as price-fixing, monopolization and generic drug antitrust issues—anticompetitive “reverse payment” agreements between brand name pharmaceutical companies and generic companies. Also, prior to joining a private practice, Buchman was an assistant attorney general in the Antitrust Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

Ioannou litigates antitrust matters for a range of industries, including horizontal and vertical restraints of trade and monopolization claims. He has litigated complex cases, including In re American Express Anti-Steering Rules Antitrust Litigation; Garber, et al. v. Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, et al.; and Laumann, et al. v. National Hockey League, et al. Ioannou also started his career as an assistant attorney general in the Antitrust Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office and has, throughout his 18-year career in antitrust litigation, also managed litigation compliance and counseled major New York state agencies and political subdivisions as well as quasi-governmental entities and other public entities.
