Case Overview
SharkNinja has issued a global recall of 1.8 million pressure cookers following reports of more than 100 burn incidents. Pressure cooker lawsuits are beginning to be filed. Plaintiffs allege that the pressure cookers’ lids can be opened during use, causing a violent ejection of the culinary device’s contents often at the temperature of boiling water – 212 degrees. This recall of nearly 2 million pressure cookers is a strong indicator that the product was defectively manufactured and designed.
Why are people filing pressure cooker lawsuits?
On May 1, 2025, SharkNinja, a Massachusetts based company, issued a global recall for its Ninja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Pressure Cooker. Customers reported more than 100 burn injuries, including more than 50 reports of second and third degree burns to the face and body resulting from the pressure cooker’s lid opening during use. This defect allows boiling hot food and liquid to explode from the device, posing a significant burn risk to anyone nearby as the contents of the cooker are propelled across the room.
SharkNinja manufactured its pressure cookers in China and sold them at retailers across the country, including:
- Amazon
- Costco
- Sam’s Club
- Target
- Walmart
The company sold these pressure cookers from January 2019 through March 2025, at a cost of about $200. The recall notice states approximately 26 lawsuits against SharkNinja had been filed as of May 1, 2025.
Other manufactures being sued
The SharkNinja pressure cooker is not the first to have reported defects and injuries from usage. Motley Rice attorneys recently filed a pressure cooker explosion lawsuit against Nesco, for a client’s severe burn injuries. Our attorneys also represent clients in several additional lawsuits filed against Sunbeam and other manufacturers and retailers regarding defective pressure cookers.

How many people have been injured by defective pressure cookers?
Currently there are over 100 reports of injuries related specifically to the SharkNinja recall, with over 50 of those reported being second or third degree burn injuries. A study published in 2023 found that there were approximately 1,667 pressure cooker-related injuries annually.
What causes these pressure cooker burn injuries?
The Ninja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Pressure Cooker recall specifically cites a problem with the lid of the cooker having the potential to open during the cooking process. Since the contents of the cooker are pressurized, the lid opening could result in an explosive ejection of the contents. This is a dangerous situation for anyone in the area since food in the pressure cooker can be scalding hot, presenting a significant danger of serious burns and trauma. What makes this more dangerous is that anyone nearby can be hurt, not just the person using the pressure cooker.
