Judge Barbier granted preliminary approval of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlements, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana has now issued a press release announcing the start of the court-ordered Notice Program to inform people, businesses and other entities about the settlements.

U.S. District Judge Barbier has granted preliminary approval of two class action settlements that were reached between BP and the BP MDL Plaintiffs' Steering Committee (PSC). One of the settlements deals with economic and property damages claims, and the other deals with medical claims.

According to an article featured in Los Angeles Daily Journal, the U.S. Justice Department recently announced that San Francisco-based pharmaceutical company McKesson Corp., agreed to a more than $190 million settlement to resolve federal allegations that the company violated the False Claim Act (FCA) by giving inflated pricing reports of prescription drugs to First DataBank, whose published drug prices many state Medicaid programs use to set payment rates.

The Rhode Island Affiliate of The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), represented by Motley Rice members Fidelma Fitzpatrick and Bob McConnell, filed a federal court brief in opposition to the United States' motion for summary judgment in a wrongful death lawsuit involving Chinese detainee Hiu Lui "Jason" Ng. The United States has asked the court to relieve the government from liability in the case.

The Honorable Carl Barbier, the U.S. District Court Judge overseeing the BP Deepwater Horizon litigation, said in a hearing yesterday that he will likely grant preliminary approval of the multibillion dollar settlement submitted to the court on April 18, 2012. The settlement was reached between the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee (PSC) for the BP multidistrict litigation and BP. When approved, it will resolve thousands of claims involving economic and property damage losses, as well as spill exposure and cleanup-related physical injury claims.
