Veterans’ Input Requested: The VA extends deadline for Burn Pit Registry input

The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Health Administration announced earlier this week that they are extending the deadline for comments and recommendations on the proposed collection of information for the Open Burn Pit Registry. The new deadline is Aug. 30, 2013.

Veterans exposed to burn pits while deployed as well as the interested general public are encouraged to submit comments and ideas on what criteria should be included in the Open Burn Pit Registry. According to a recent Navy Times article, “One female veteran said she would like to see the VA monitor women and their children for long-term health concerns.” She was deployed in Iraq in 2005 and lived across the street from a burn pit. Two years later, upon returning home, she had her first child who is now experiencing health issues and tested positive for heavy metals only found in countries that burn e-waste.

Instructions on how to submit information for the registry may be found online here.
