Motley Rice talks about health and legal access at 2024 Charleston Black Expo
Motley Rice is proud to participate in the 2024 Charleston Black Expo in a number of ways. The Charleston Black Expo provides a day filled with discussions, cultural exhibitions, business showcases, workshops, and more, all centered on Charleston’s Black community.
Health and Legal Equality Panel (March 9, 2024, Room 11. 11am-12pm)
Motley Rice civil litigator Marlon Kimpson and toxic tort lawyer Tope Leyimu will participate in “Health and Legal Equality: How to Bridge Gaps to Create Sustainable Change.” This dynamic panel discussion focuses on uniting as a community to enhance legal and medical accessibility while raising awareness on health disparities affecting women and people of color.
The panel will be moderated by Tammy McCottry, a Charleston native and host of “Tammy, Your Story, Your Community.”
Panel participants include:
- W. Melvin Brown III, MD – A native Charlestonian, 20-year Navy veteran, and physician, Dr. Brown serves on the MUSC Board of Trustees as the medical profession representative from the Sixth Congressional District.
- Rev. DeMett Jenkins – The granddaughter of civil rights activist Esau Jenkins, Rev. Jenkins is the immediate past Lilly Director of Education and Engagement for Faith-Based Communities for the International African American Museum and the Director of Spiritual Care and Outreach at Trident Medical Center.
- Marlon Kimpson – The former South Carolina State Senator for District 42, Marlon Kimpson is a knowledgeable personal injury and consumer protection trial lawyer as well as an active member in the Charleston community. He represents women who developed reproductive cancers after using toxic hair relaxer products. He currently serves on the White House Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.
- Tope Leyimu – Tope Leyimu serves on the board of directors for Charleston Legal Access and is a member of the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission. As a toxic tort lawyer, Tope represents women who developed reproductive cancers after using toxic hair relaxer products and fire fighters who have developed severe health problems, such as kidney cancer, from exposure to high levels of PFAS in bunker gear and firefighting foam (aqueous film-forming foam).
This panel goal is to provide valuable information that can be shared with those not in attendance.
