Gel Fuel Fires: Manufacturers recall pourable gel fuel

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced that nine manufacturers are recalling pourable gel fuel following numerous reports of explosions that have caused severe burns to bystanders, as well as property damage.

The pourable gel fuel is used in firepots commonly used to decorate both indoor and outdoor areas of the home. Burn victims have reported that the gel fuel in the firepots shot directional flames, which stuck to their skin and nearby surfaces and was difficult to extinguish.  According to an article by Reuters, federal officials are aware of more than 60 accidents causes by the gel fuel, which include two reported deaths and 34 hospitalizations.

Motley Rice is currently litigating personal injury and products liability lawsuits against Napa Home and Garden, Inc., and multiple other defendants on behalf of injured people who allege they suffered severe burn injuries caused by Napa Firelites™ firepots and pourable eco-gel citronella fuel. Napa recalled its products in June 2011.

The recall involves two million units of pourable gel fuel packets sold since 2008, and the nine manufacturers are Bird Brain, Inc.; Bond Manufacturing; Sunjel Company; Fuel Barons, Inc.; Lamplight Farms, Inc.; Luminosities, Inc.; Pacific Décor, Ltd.; Real Flame; and Smart Solar, Inc.
